Answer: most live between 75 – 90 rat years. Unfortunately for us, they live at a fast rate of 30:1, meaning 60 rat years is just 2 years for humans. The longevity of your fur babies relies on four main factors:
Wire spaces cannot be more than ½ inch because they can get out. If their head fits, they can get out. They need space to climb, potty, sleep, and exercise; therefore, size does matter! Rat Manors do not provide enough room to fit a proper wheel - a 14" metal saucer - found on Amazon, Exotic Nutrition, and here. Ventilation and space are essential for their health, so no tanks, hamster cages, reptile cages, or plastic bins. They need flat surfaces, not perches, and you need places to hang hammocks. This eliminates large bird cages from being viable housing. Absorbent material is needed for hammocks, huts, and solid surfaces so that they do not walk through or drag their tail through pee. Since fleece is not absorbent, we add wicking material to all our fleece products. We suggest cages with FDA coating and 1/2 x 1/2 inch grid floor/shelves with a litter tray underneath, or use absorbent washable materials to keep your rats healthy and clean.
Alfalfa, dried beans and corn, hay, and artichokes can build up in their digestive tract and kill them because they cannot pass the fibrous material. Read ingredients on treats because even if there is a picture of a rat, or it says the treats are for rodents, that does NOT mean it is really okay. Even Oxbow, the maker of the #1 commercial rat food (small flat triangle food pellets) uses alfalfa in treats.
Snak Shak are a BIG NO NO. VERY DANGEROUS. Alfalfa and Pine Wood with honey and peanut butter. The sweet makes them mistake it for a treat.
